personality:

Dick Grayson was the boy without fear, the first Robin to Bruce Wayne’s Batman, before he grew up and became a hero of his own design: Nightwing.

Charming, irrepressible, determined, and deeply sympathetic, Dick was the shining light to Bruce’s shadows even as a boy. Rather than fully sinking into and losing himself in his anger and grief at losing his parents, Dick leaned into his knack for lightening and brightening up almost any situation and threw himself whole-heartedly into training, crime-fighting, and the pursuit of justice. All of this speaks to Dick’s deep natural well of empathy and goodness, along with his desire for a purpose greater than himself and his need to do good in the world.

He and Bruce both lost their parents in tragic incidents, but unlike Bruce, Dick has always had the ability to keep himself in the present and to look forward to a brighter, better future. He doesn’t believe stopping evil is where his duty ends; instead, he’s determined to actively inject goodness into the world and encourages his friends and family to do the same.

Quick with a quip and equally as quick to empathize with someone down on their luck, Dick is never short of friends. Along with being fun-loving and easy-going, he is also steady, reliable, thoughtful, and kind. He likes being around people and is deeply loyal to his friends and family, but not blindly so. Dick has stood up to Bruce and others he cares about and looks up to on a number of occasions when he disagrees with them, and when called upon to take down a friend, family member, or father who has been changed into something dangerous, he doesn’t hesitate to fight them if necessary to keep them from hurting innocents or to save them from themselves.

A natural leader, Nightwing wins the loyalty of his teammates through a combination of personal charm, natural empathy, and undeniable ability. Friends follow him because they love him; newcomers follow him because he’s an excellent strategist and fighter with the ability to bring together a disparate group of heroes, all with different levels and types of powers, all with large personalities of their own. He understands how to motivate his teammates, encourages them throughout training, trusts them during fights, and checks in on them afterwards, aware that not all injuries are visible ones. Skilled at conflict resolution, he eschews Batman’s tendency to keep secrets and prefers transparency with his friends and teammates… most of the time.

Despite lacking superpowers, he has won a seat at the table with heavy hitters time and time again through his grit, track record, trustworthiness, and skill. When it became clear he was Batman’s replacement as leader of the Justice League, almost every hero accepted his position without question, a testament to his work ethic and ability. Almost every hero has had mostly good interactions with the friendly and happy-to-collaborate Nightwing. In current canon, he has won so much respect and trust from his fellow heroes and the people of the world that when the JLA disbanded, he and the Titans were called to take their place as Earth’s premiere superhero team and first line of defense.

But Dick doesn’t seek out glory, and he doesn’t look for ways to put himself above others. He took on the mantle of Batman during Bruce’s ‘death’ because it became clear to him that a Batman was needed but wore the cowl reluctantly. His time as a hero has largely been successful and he’s immensely popular, but he remains humble, kind, and as dedicated to the cause of good as when he first donned the Robin suit all those years ago.
